Cool Brick designed by Emerging Objects
Tethon 3D sponsored the project “Cool Brick”. With the concept and design coming from the design team at Virginia San Fratello & Ronald Rael and the use of Tethon 3D’s Tethonite Powder, the “Cool Brick” was born!
The “Cool Brick” was inspired by the Muscatese Evaporative cooling window, which contained a water filled ceramic vessel surrounded by wood screens. These wood screens directed the hot and dry air to travel around the vessel. This would cause the water to evaporate which in turn would add moisture and cool the air as it entered the building.
This 3d printed ceramic brick is extremely porous which allows water to be absorbed like a sponge. It was also designed as a three dimensional lattice which would allow air to freely travel through the wall. With the same concept from the Muscatese Evaporative cooling window, the brick soaks up water and as the air passes through the structure it will evaporate the water thus cooling the air as it comes out the other side.
That’s not all the design has to offer, the unique shape to this brick has a specific purpose. This shape creates a shaded surface on the wall to keep a large percentage of the wall cool, which dramatically improves its performance! These “Cool Bricks’ will change the lives of those living in desert environments that don’t have access to modern air conditioning.
